GRANDE RUE, BRIANCON, FRANCE

Image Number 21

Briancon on the French-Italian border is said to be the most heavily fortified position in Europe, thanks to Vauban the architect of Louis XIV.  Small wonder that Napoleon also made his way to conquest via Briancon.  Some of the fortresses include major streets such as the Grand Rue, built by Vauban in the Fort des Tetes.
