FURPHY WATER TANK
COLDSTREAM, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
IMAGE NUMBER 1204
Furphy tanks are part of Australia’s history. They even form part of Australia’s slang language - a “furphy” is a false rumour. Furphy water tanks were made in Shepparton, Victoria, by J Furphy & Sons from 1864. Farmers used horses to pull them to carry water to sheep and cattle and fight fires. Many of the old tanks feature poems and sayings on the steel ends. The old tanks are fought over by collectors each time one is offered for sale. This tank was found at the Yarra Valley Dairy near Coldstream Victoria.
This image was one of a series of images commissioned from Atticus Webb by the Amber Property Group for the Geoff Brady Collection of unique Victorian landscapes in 2020. The collection was compiled to mark the opening of the Sebel Hotel in Ringwood in February 2021. The images feature throughout the hotel.
