THE BRIDGE GATE

HEIDELBERG, GERMANY

Image Number 7

Heidelberg is a city of 150,000 people in South-West Germany.  Famous for its university (which dates from 1386) and its old town, Heidelberg was fortunate that it was never bombed during the war.  This street scene, looking towards the main city gate on the River Neckar, was captured by Atticus Webb just before dawn.  The Old Bridge and its wooden predecessors led to the town’s main north entrance, which was protected by the Bridge Gate. This medieval gate survived all floods and ice, and after the construction of the stone bridge served as a guardhouse and gaol.
